From the first appointment to the first projection: the process in seven steps
Anyone considering a digital solution for their facade quickly thinks of a construction site: scaffolding, dust, closed sales areas. With projection glass, the opposite is true – the installation is one of the most inconspicuous in the field of digital media, because the existing glazing remains intact.
This article describes the typical project workflow – step by step.
Step 1: Site Analysis
It starts with an on-site appointment. The glass surfaces (size, structure, coatings), the spatial situation behind the pane, possible projector positions, power supply and network connection are checked – as well as the ambient light in the evening, which determines the design of the projection technology.
Equally important are the content-related questions: What should the surface show? For whom? At what times? The answers determine the surface layout and system size.
Step 2: Measurement
After the fundamental feasibility, precise measurements are taken. Each pane is measured to the millimeter – including frames, muntins, and any drill holes or fittings.
Based on this, the film is precisely cut and fabricated. Accurate measurement is a prerequisite for the film to sit seamlessly and bubble-free on the surface later.
Step 3: Film Installation
The projection film is installed on the inside of the glazing – comparable to the processing of high-quality window films, but with additional electrical connection.
The pane is thoroughly cleaned, the film precisely positioned and applied over the entire surface. Afterwards, the connection edges are discreetly wired and connected to the control unit, which handles the change between transparent and projectable states.
For a typical shop window, this step is completed in one working day; the business can usually remain open.
Step 4: Projector Installation and Alignment
The projector is installed in parallel or subsequently – usually on the ceiling of the interior, occasionally on trusses or in special enclosures. The position follows the planning from the site analysis: image size, projection angle and beam path must match without crossing walkways.
Afterwards, the device is mechanically aligned until the raw image completely covers the target area.
Step 5: Calibration
Now comes the fine tuning. The image is precisely calibrated to the glass surface using software: distortion correction for oblique projection angles (warping), pixel-accurate masking of the edges, color and brightness adjustment. In multi-projector systems, the individual images are seamlessly blended.
The result of the calibration determines whether the projection appears like a native screen – this is where professional installation separates from improvisation.
Step 6: CMS Setup
The system is technically ready – what's missing is the control. The content management system is set up, allowing the operator to upload content, create playlists, and define schedules.
Full automation is typical: transparency mode and projection operation switch time- or twilight-controlled, content runs according to a weekly schedule, and the system reports its status remotely. After setup, regular operation runs without on-site intervention.
Step 7: Training and Handover
Finally, the team is instructed: playing content, adjusting schedules, checking status – in modern systems, this takes minutes and requires no technical prior knowledge.
Upon handover, the operator receives documentation, access data, and contacts for support and maintenance. From this moment on, the facade is a medium in regular operation.
How long does it all take?
The most common surprise for clients is the timeframe: for a shop window project, there are typically only a few weeks between commissioning and the first projection – primarily determined by the fabrication of the film. The on-site work itself takes one to three days, depending on the size.
Compared to renovations or LED installations, this is a minimal intervention – without scaffolding, without approval procedures for structural changes, without closing times.
